New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) As the new government gets ready for work, Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, one of the stalwarts of the last Congress-led UPA government, continues to grapple with poor health। He has been in hospital for the past seven months after a heart attack and though his condition is not critical anymore, his recovery is slow, doctors said.
Dasmunsi, who was holding the information and broadcasting portfolio when he suffered a heart attack in October last year, was made minister without portfolio after his condition failed to improve। He was admitted to the Apollo Hospital in November 2008। His wife Deepa contested the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls from Raiganj in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district on a Congress ticket, and won। Doctors attending on Dasmunsi here say that his neurological condition is "status quo" but other parameters have been improving in the past three months and "he is not critical now". "He (Dasmunsi) is still not able to recognise people, but his physical health is improving," his brother Satya Prakash told IANS. "He is being made to sit on a chair for two hours every day and is also being taken around on a wheelchair for two hours everyday," he said. Dasmunsi is fed through a feeding tube (percutaneous endoscopy gastrostomy) and his breathing is also assisted. Apollo doctors said Dasmunsi was not in a coma. They described his condition as 'hypoxic encephalopathy' which is caused due to cardiac arrest. Hypoxic encephalopathy is caused by decreased rate of blood flow or decreased oxygen in the blood. Severe cases can cause permanent brain damage within five minutes. Dasmunsi was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Oct 13 last year after he suffered a second heart attack in three months. He was shifted to the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital at his family's request Nov 20. Dasmunsi, who has a 10-year history of diabetes, first suffered a heart attack July 8 and underwent an angioplasty and stenting procedure in two coronary arteries.

Fathers crave to meet kids in custody of estranged wives
New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) Indian American scientist Ravi Chandran has been searching desperately for his son Aditya in India for more than a year - after his ex-wife "abducted" the child, now six years old, and brought him to India in 2007.
"After the divorce, I was given full custody of Aditya by the New York Court on Sep 14, 2007, but she (wife Vijayasree Voora) adducted the child and came to India, and now she is moving from one place to another to avoid arrest," Chandran said at a press meet organised by NGOs here.
Chandran left his job with a pharma company in the US to look for his son in India. He has shifted to Hyderabad.
Chandran says he has been knocking on every door, begging everyone to find his son. "I really don't understand why people think that a father cannot love his kid. I just can't sleep thinking of my son. He has not been admitted to any school for more than 21 months," he sobbed.
He has scoured numerous places, including schools, and visited many police stations to trace his son.
Vijyayasree had filed a petition in the Madras High Court in November 2007 for sole custody of the child, which was dismissed.
In February this year, the Supreme Court of India ordered Karnataka Police to find Aditya.
Kumar V. Jahgirdar, president of NGO Children's Rights Initiative For Shared Parenting (CRISP), said: "It is very unfair that we give an advantage to the mother in custody cases and easily cancel the visitation rights of the father. We get a large number of calls from India and abroad from fathers seeking help to be able to meet their kids.
"I understand the grief of a father who has not been able to see his kids after divorce so I made it a mission to help such people," Jahgirdar told IANS. He himself is fighting for custody of his daughter. His ex-wife has married cricketer Anil Kumble.
"As the school of my daughter is near my house, I just wanted that I should be able to keep her on weekdays, and they could keep her on weekends. But they have not agreed and the case is in the Supreme Court," Jahgirdar added.
Sayed Maqdoom, a Canadian citizen of Indian origin, committed suicide on April 9 in Bangalore after not being allowed to meet his child regularly. He was fighting for custody of his son and was frustrated after his wife filed a false dowry case against him.
"I am shocked with the Indian system. My brother has died fighting to see his son. He died at the age of 33. Now I just pray that no such father should die craving to see his child," Maqdoom's sister Sabina told IANS.
Maqdoom had made a video clip of himself while committing suicide. His wife had apparently married thrice earlier before meeting him.
Rajiv Kocher is another father who has lost visitation rights to his child.
"Despite the court orders I was not allowed to see my kid, so one day I could not control myself when I saw my child in the court and ran away with him and kept him with me for a week and then returned him. But later on I found that my ex-wife has slapped a number of charges against me and now I am in hiding and can't even see my kid," Kocher told IANS.

Delhi auto drivers taken for a ride by financiers' mafia

New Delhi, March 10 (IANS) Delhiites often complain of autorickshaw drivers overcharging and being rude, but not many passengers know that a majority of these drivers are a harried lot as they fall victim to auto financiers who are out to con them of their money and even their vehicles.
"As many as 50,000 of the total of 54,000 autorickshaw drivers in Delhi are in the vice-like grip of financiers who are deceiving them of crores (millions) of rupees by deploying illegal and high-handed tactics," said Rakesh Agarwal, secretary of NyayaBhoomi, an NGO that has launched a campaign against these auto finance mafias. "Forged signatures, (getting) signatures on blank papers and dealing in undated papers are some of the tactics that they use to rob autorickshaw drivers of their only source of livelihood," Agarwal told IANS. One such father-son duo that duped scores of people through their auto finance firm was caught by the police Saturday, an official said. Manoj and Ram Avatar, who operated under the name of Manoj Auto Deals in west Delhi's Uttam Nagar, were Sunday sent to police remand until March 12 by a city court. They apparently worked in tandem with several other financiers too. Netrapal was one of the many auto drivers who fell into their trap. "I wanted to replace my old autorickshaw with a new one. So I sold the old one to Manoj and Ram Avatar in January for Rs.270,000 and also gave them another Rs.60,000 to get a new one. They agreed to give a new auto for Rs.430,000, so I wanted a loan of Rs.100,000," Netrapal said. He finally got a new auto from the accused, but later learnt that the two had taken a loan of Rs.300,000 on the same vehicle from another financier, while he got only a Rs.100,000 loan. Another victim is Hari Om, whose problem is even more complicated. He bought an autorickshaw from Manoj Auto Deals, but the vehicle's documents show someone else as the owner. And the receipts issued by the father-son team are bogus and bear no name. A case against Manoj and Ram Avatar was registered at the Pitampura police station after intervention by NyayaBhoomi Saturday. Agarwal says there are several such auto mafias operating in the capital. "More than 90 percent of the autorickshaws are owned by the so called auto-mafias working under the garb of financiers. They obtain autorickshaws for around Rs.150,000 on fake names and then sell them to the drivers for over Rs.300,000. And to pay the instalments the autodrivers turn unethical," Agarwal said. Said Sanjay Kumar, who has been driving an auto for 10 years: "I bought an auto in 2000, by paying Rs.30,000 and the rest on finance. I paid the whole amount in one-and-a-half years and the financier took my all receipts and promised to give me the papers in two-three days, but he did not. Then I approached another financier, Vikas Auto ... but the vehicle is still not on my name. NyayaBhoomi last week launched a campaign against these auto mafias and has put up posters on autorickshaws, publicising its contact number 011-40517777 on which people can call and convey their grievances. Another initiative of the NGOs is to encourage auto drivers to be honest and well-mannered. Agarwal said he would write to the officials concerned, including the chief minister and the transport minister, and urge them to constitute a high-level committee to probe the auto-finance mafia.

Illegal trade in endangered birds flourishes in Delhi

New Delhi, Feb 19 (IANS) Hundreds of colourful parakeets, pretty canaries, menacing falcons and other endangered birds can be found in the national capital - not in zoos or forested areas but in the cages of illegal bird sellers who openly flout laws to make a quick buck.
"If there is demand, there will be supply. Several ministers and big people come here to buy these birds. This keeps us going despite seizures and prohibitory laws," a bird seller near Jama Masjid told IANS on condition of anonymity. Jama Masjid in Old Delhi is just one of the several places in and around the capital where laws are flouted to sell endangered birds. Behind the Red Fort, at INA Market, Moolchand crossing, Minto Road and Noida's Sector 18 market, many vendors flaunt the birds without fear. "I have broken several cameras.
If you want the same thing to happen to you then go ahead and take pictures," threatened a bird seller in Noida's Atta Market but didn't attempt to hide his illegal wares, which included the rare macquacaca. "The root cause of this business flourishing is that the wildlife inspectors who seize the endangered birds show only the less important birds in court, allowing the illegal sellers to be let off after a meagre fine of Rs.100," said Ashok Kumar, a trustee of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). The illegal vendors usually sell each parakeet for Rs.40-50, but those wanting talking birds have to shell out Rs.500. A falcon can cost as much as Rs.20,000 depending upon the breed, while owls are priced only marginally lower.
The pretty hill mynahs are sold for about Rs.2,500. According to Kumar, endangered birds worth hundreds of thousands of rupees are smuggled into Delhi every day from Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. "On any given day, around 50,000 birds are brought here - mostly parakeets, mynahs, munias, bulbuls, koels, hill mynahs, canaries and eagles," he said. "The rose-ringed parakeet, which is a talking species, is much in demand. Then come other parakeet varieties like Alexandrian and red-breasted species. The black-headed munia and finches are also widely traded," Kumar added. Some birds are kept as status symbols since they are very expensive and exotic. However, many are also bought for religious, superstitious and medicinal reasons. The claws and feathers of birds like great-horned owls, pariah kites and even bats are used by those who believe in sorcery. Kumar feels that the present laws are inadequate to prevent trade in endangered birds. According to him, the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) need to be strengthened to ensure that the lovely winged creatures do not become extinct and are free to fly.

Hansraj College gears up for 60th anniversary

New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, actors Shiney Ahuja and Praveen Dabas, director Anurag Kashyap and politician Naveen Jindal are all alumni of Delhi University's Hansraj College, which is gearing up to celebrate its 60th anniversary early next month.
The college, which turns 60 on March 7, is producing a documentary film in which the alumni and principals since 1948 will share their experiences. "We sent our teams to interview Shah Rukh Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Shiney Ahuja and Praveen Dabas and they very readily shared their experiences as students of the college," S.R. Arora, principal of Hansraj College, told IANS. Arora however clarified that Shah Rukh was busy with film promotion commitments and was scheduled for a shoulder surgery, and will record for the documentary after that. "We have been putting our full effort to make this event a success. Various teams of teachers and students are working to contact and gather the experiences of famous personalities (who studied in the college)," He said. "Politicians like Naveen Jindal, V.K. Malhotra, Ajay Maken and journalist Vinod Dua will also be a part of this documentary," He added. To commemorate the occasion, the postal department will also launch a Rs.5 stamp in the name of Hans Raj with a picture of the college building on it. The stamp will be launched by a celebrity March 7, he added. Arora said that Hans Raj was a noted educationist and the first principal of DAV schools and colleges, which were set up after the death of Swami Dayanand Saraswati in 1886. Hans Raj was one of the greatest leaders of the Arya Samaj. He is also known to have promoted Khadi and Agri- based industries even before Mahatma Gandhi. The college authorities are sparing no effort or expense to make the occasion memorable. The college building is being decorated and its 575-seat auditorium is expected to be made fully air-conditioned with the latest light and sound system. The capacity of its parking lot will also be doubled to fit in 100 cars. For the renovation, a sum of Rs.10 million will be invested, of which Rs.5 million has been given by the management and the rest will be collected through donations. The college also plans to launch a bilingual magazine Smarika on same day. At the college's golden jubilee celebration it had given many commemorative shields to the alumni who had excelled in various fields.

Hope and jobs for students at Delhi University's job fair

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) At a time jobs are becoming scarce and pink slips the order of the day with the global meltdown, there is reason to cheer. Delhi University's newly-launched Central Placement Cell has provided jobs to at least 200 undergraduate students with major companies, including IT major Wipro, pharma giant Ranbaxy and BPO major Genpact.
The first phase of recruitment took place between Dec 8 and 10 in which around 154 students got employment. The second phase, which began Jan 21 and ended Tuesday, ensured jobs to 45 applicants, while 440 short-listed students are awaiting results of their applications. "Around 4,564 students from 48 colleges participated in this job fair in which around 200 students have been ensured good position in top companies. The response of the students was good," Seema M. The CPC was launched in September last year with a view to provide opportunity to students of less known and off-campus colleges. The university authorities were delighted with the new initiative. "There has been overwhelming response from the students, who also felt encouraged after getting a good job. It has equally benefited the companies that came for the recruitment," said S.K. Vij, Dean students' welfare. Students were happy with the job fair and the opportunities. "After the global crisis we did not think we would be able to find employment so easily. Till now we have been getting news of retrenchments from everywhere, but the CPC of the university has come as a great help," said Vinod Mehra, a student of Aurobindo College. Company officials also felt satisfied that they were able to find the right candidates easily. "Getting a suitable candidate is not easy, but in such events we get an opportunity to interact with a large number of applicants, who can be scanned in a proper and convenient manner. The applicants were also cooperative," said an official of IT giant Wipro. "We expect the number of students and recruiters to increase manifold the next time. We will approach more companies to join this recruitment process," Parihar said. She said the eligibility criteria for students to enrol in the CPC was "any final year student from any course with at least 60 percent marks in Class 12". Every company held its own scanning process through written tests, interviews and group discussions at the job fair. Earlier, the companies would visit only the well-known colleges for campus recruitments but the CPC has ensured recruitment of students from any college, Parihar said. "It was our effort to ensure that placements are purely on the basis of merit and not on the brand value of a college," said Vij. "We could never think of joining such placements earlier, as companies would not visit our college. But now it's nice to see that we too have an opportunity to at least participate in the process of recruitment," said Aditya Sharma, student of Ram Lal Anand College.

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) At a time jobs are becoming scarce and pink slips the order of the day with the global meltdown, there is reason to cheer. Delhi University's newly-launched Central Placement Cell has provided jobs to at least 200 undergraduate students with major companies, including IT major Wipro, pharma giant Ranbaxy and BPO major Genpact.
The first phase of recruitment took place between Dec 8 and 10 in which around 154 students got employment. The second phase, which began Jan 21 and ended Tuesday, ensured jobs to 45 applicants, while 440 short-listed students are awaiting results of their applications. "Around 4,564 students from 48 colleges participated in this job fair in which around 200 students have been ensured good position in top companies. The response of the students was good," Seema M. BJP says it has found new ally in Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the upcoming general elections in Uttar Pradesh with a new ally and will announce next week the name of the party it is allying with, says BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.
"We are in talks with a party and we will announce it at an appropriate time, probably next week," Javadekar told IANS.
Javadekar said at its central election committee meeting scheduled for Jan 29, the party would take a call on whether former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is away from active politics because of his ill health, would contest the next general elections, likely to be held in April or May.
He claimed Uttar Pradesh leader and party vice-president Kalyan Singh's exit from the BJP would have no impact on the party's performance in the upcoming polls.
"He was unfortunately driven by personal agenda and personal agenda does not work. He was concerned about one or two seats - his own and that of his son," the BJP spokesperson held.
Kalyan Singh, who was thrice the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, left the party when it announced Ashok Pradhan would be its nominee to contest the Bulandshahr Lok Sabha seat. Kalyan Singh had accused Pradhan of being responsible for the defeat of Kalyan's son Rajvir in the 2007 assembly elections.
Javadekar said terrorism and inflation would be at the centre of the upcoming general election campaign as they were during the recently concluded assembly polls.
There has been a perecption that the two issues did not find much resonance during the assembly polls. Reacting to this, the BJP spokesperson said: "It is over-simplification, not analysis, to say that the issues of terrorism and inflation did not work. Inflation matters even today.
"When we won Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Punjab every one said it was because of the rising prices that the Congress lost," he said.
"We have won 40 Lok Sabha seats and got 300 MLAs in these three states. The Congress got only 280. We have got 34 percent vote, while Congress got 32 percent. We have two major states. The Congress retained only a city-state and they won in Rajasthan because of our failure at micro level management," Javadekar said.
Javadekar was confident that the BJP and the Shiv Sena would contest the next general elections as allies despite the current border spat between Karnataka and Maharashtra.
"We will have electoral ties with the Shiv Sena, no problem. The boundary dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra has been there for 50 years now and the Congress is responsible for it since the party ruled Karnataka for 49 years and Maharashtra for 42 years," he said. (IANS)
